Game Development on Blockchain

Current gaming business models are extremely successful at building large user bases but they still suffer from the consequences of a game’s lifecycle. When the lifecycle comes to an end, game developers often have to start fresh on a new game and users have little to show for their efforts aside from an outdated item or achievement.

Blockchain technology allows for game developers to leverage the ability to establish provable, tamper-proof evidence of ownership.

Ownership of in-game assets allows users to take those assets outside of the originating game, creating an entirely different paradigm of game design and development. For example, a user could earn a weapon skin or character apparel in one game and use it in another, or a strategy game that uses resources collected or bought from another sandbox-exploration game. For game assets to move throughout a gaming ecosystem, games must be able to recognize an item and undoubtedly confirm its owner. Blockchain technology allows for these types of actions to be done transparently.

Blockchain infrastructure offer game developers a number of benefits:

  1. Transparent economies and the ability to use in-game assets outside of its originating game
  2. More secure gaming environment as there are fewer centralized servers putting user assets and data at risk
  3. Clear path for native community-driven workstreams (game development daos, on- chain voting on next phase of game story, ect. )
  4. Increased engagement and loyalty by creating unique revenue streams for developers and users

Along with the benefits however, there are hurdles to be overcome on the path to success. First, common blockchain programming languages were not designed with assets as first class citizens. NFTs that represent in-game assets are typically trapped within the smart contract that created them, meaning users don't truly own the item. The smart contract just keeps a list of who has ownership rights, which complicates interactions with multiple distinct NFTs.

In typical blockchains, NFTs only act as a record of ownership while everything else (eg, stats, traits, and images) are kept off-chain due to the limitations and high cost of on-chain storage. Usually composability for NFTs is accomplished by copying data from multiple NFTs and creating a new one. This process is clearly not suitable for in-game usage at scale.

To truly enable game developers to effectively build on a blockchain, an asset-centric data model and intuitive programming language are needed.

Sui Features for Gaming

Sui employs a novel object-centric data model dedicated to creating and managing digital assets broadly. Everything stored on-chain in Sui is represented as an object and the corresponding programming language, Sui Move, is designed specifically to complement Sui’s data model.

In Sui, all objects are treated as first class citizens as they all have a similar data structure. Objects can represent anything, from token balances to in-game assets. While there are still accounts and smart contracts, objects exist outside of smart contracts and are recognized by the blockchain in a direct manner while actually being owned by users.

Video game development often needs the ability to arrange objects in hierarchical structures, which is difficult to accomplish in a traditional blockchain where objects are just abstracted data structures. On Sui, objects can be owned by other objects allowing for hierarchies to be established natively in the blockchain, enhancing object composability. For example, dynamic NFTs are easy to accomplish by adding logic that changes an object’s trait or appearance when it takes ownership of a specific object.

Dynamic NFTs in other blockchains are typically accomplished by burning the previous NFTs and minting altered ones. In Sui, the object’s state is able to change but the object’s history is immutable. This unique process allows for objects to have a clear traceable  path from inception to its current version that is easily referenceable.

Games must be highly performante and scalable. Sui can execute hundreds of thousands of transactions per second while also providing horizontal scaling on-demand.

‍

Most objects on Sui have a single owner, defined in the object itself. Transactions involving this type of object can bypass the computationally heavy total ordering and consensus required in other blockchains. Instead, these transactions go through a streamlined check that confirms the owner of the object is sending the transaction. This process provides extremely low latency for transactions interacting with single-owner objects, the majority of which are finalized subsecond. This is true finality, not probabilistic confirmation. No chain re-organizations ever! Because transactions for single-owner objects are not conditional on one another, they can be processed in parallel. Parallelization allows for an extremely fast and seamless gaming experience.

In addition, parallelization allows for Sui to have horizontal scaling. Validators can run additional nodes as needed to provide more execution power to the network. With this horizontal scalability, nodes can provision additional capacity to handle peak transaction loads. Supply and demand elasticity means little to no downtime with small, stable, and predictable transaction costs. Games can scale massively without a hitch or, if other apps on Sui are seeing increased demand, it doesn’t create increased costs for the network as a whole.

Unique Architecture

Game developers and players require low fees and easy onboarding for a successful gaming experience. Sui employs a reference gas pricing mechanism that helps mute the volatility in gas prices, delivering relatively stable dollar denominated gas prices. This mechanism provides a clear and obvious transaction price while ensuring the validator incentives are healthy. On Ethereum, for example, gas fees can vary drastically based on demand—an event happening on Ethereum, totally unrelated to a game, can massively impact the game’s users.

To ensure the security of blockchain assets, game developers typically rely on large validators to handle validation and execution of the game’s transactions. In the future, game developers on Sui will be able to use sparse nodes to track and even validate/execute transactions related to a select set of objects. Therefore a game developer running a game server can have a sparse node to track the state of all game players game objects and the game state, without having to track the state of another game. Objects related to the game will have sufficient data available for users while helping decentralize and increase the safety of the network.

Account Abstraction & User Experience

First and foremost, games should be fun. But almost as important, starting up with a new game should be as pain free as possible. Blockchain should not be a barrier to entry for users. There are two main sticking points when it comes to onboarding a user to a game built on the blockchain: the management of a seed phrase/wallet, and gas requirements for their initial transactions.

‍

Sui has solutions for both of these issues - zkLogin & sponsored transactions.

‍
zkLogin uses zero-knowledge cryptography to allow users to create a wallet with a typical Web2 login (e.g. Google, Twitch, Facebook, etc.). The long term goal is eliminating the need for traditional Web3 wallets as we know them today. That is where the second solution comes into play—sponsored transactions.

‍

Sponsored transactions allow application developers (or anyone) to sponsor the transactions of another user. From the user perspective, they are able to start gaming immediately without ever having to buy tokens to pay for transactions. Developers can use sponsored transactions indefinitely or sponsor a player’s initial transactions until they have earned enough to pay their own gas fees.

Combining zkLogin with sponsored transactions will create a more seamless entrypoint to games built in Web3.
